The overwhelming majority of battles during WWII took place within 15-25km. I've never liked the NC and SD classes because their protection is poor (or at least poorer than most other fast battleships) at normal combat ranges (the Americans built their navy for a war which never came, a long-range war. The incremental armor scheme was best suited to the close-range combat conditions of the North Atlantic and that's why it was not changed out after WWI (though, the German did consider an all or nothing scheme at one point). Yes, they shared the same armor scheme, but then so did Scharnhorst. People often point to the fact that both ships have 4x2 15" guns but the fact is Bismarck was originally going to have 4x2 13" guns and at one point triple and even quad turrets were considered, so Bismarck's armament was certainly not an attempt to copy Baden. The goal was not to create a modern Baden, it was to create a battleship to compete with the Richelieu class. If the Germans had wanted to create a modern Baden they would have done so with Scharnhorst. It's overrated by the Nazi-worshippers.īismarck is not super-Baden, people have got to stop saying that. ![]() ![]() ![]() No nothing is ever 100%, but I have very little respect for the super-baden.
